A portable power station turns car camping into something closer to a small cabin: a cold 12V fridge, charged phones and cameras, lights in the tent and even a coffee maker. We compared four popular models on the specs that matter for camping out of a car or truck: usable capacity, output, weight, recharge speed and how easy they are to top up while you drive.

How we chose: this is a research-based guide built from manufacturer specifications and independent reviews (StorageReview and TechRadar). We have not lab-tested these units ourselves. Specs can change between versions, so confirm details on the product page before you buy.

The best portable power stations for car camping

Best overall

Jackery Explorer 1000 v2

  • Capacity: 1,070Wh, LFP battery rated for around 4,000 cycles
  • Output: 1,500W continuous, 3,000W surge
  • Ports: 2 AC, USB-C (100W and 30W), USB-A, 12V car port
  • Charging: about 1 hour 40 minutes standard from the wall, faster emergency mode via the app
  • Weight: about 23.8 lb

Why we like it: Close to 1kWh of capacity at a weight most people can carry from the trunk to the campsite. Plenty for a 12V fridge plus lights and devices over a weekend.

Keep in mind: Only two AC outlets, so you may need a power strip for several AC devices.

Best for: Couples and families who want one dependable unit for weekend trips.

Best for many devices

Anker SOLIX C1000

  • Capacity: 1,056Wh, LFP battery
  • Output: 1,800W continuous (up to 2,400W with SurgePad for compatible devices)
  • Ports: 6 AC outlets plus USB-C and USB-A, 12V car socket output
  • Charging: 0–100% in about 58 minutes with UltraFast charging on AC
  • Weight: about 28.4 lb; expandable to 2,112Wh with an add-on battery

Why we like it: Six AC outlets and very fast wall charging make it easy to top up before a trip and run several devices at once.

Keep in mind: Heavier than the Jackery, and its fastest charging needs wall power.

Best for: Groups that run several AC devices, such as a coffee maker, lights and laptops.

Most capacity

BLUETTI AC180

  • Capacity: 1,152Wh, LFP battery rated for 3,500+ cycles to 80%
  • Output: 1,800W continuous, 2,700W surge
  • Ports: 4 AC, USB-C 100W, 4 USB-A, 12V DC, 15W wireless charging pad
  • Charging: about 1.3–1.8 hours on fast AC charging; 12/24V car charging supported
  • Weight: about 35 lb

Why we like it: The most capacity of the four and a strong inverter, with handy extras like a wireless phone charging pad.

Keep in mind: At about 35 lb it is the heaviest here, so think about who will carry it.

Best for: Longer stays where you want the biggest buffer of power.

Best compact pick

EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus

  • Capacity: 286Wh, LFP battery rated for 3,000 cycles to 80%
  • Output: 600W (1,200W X-Boost for some resistive devices)

Why we like it: Small and light enough to live in the car, and you can add a battery later if your needs grow.

Keep in mind: 286Wh is enough for phones, lights and a night or so of a small fridge, but not for heavy appliances.

Best for: Solo travelers, day trips and anyone with limited cargo space.

Think about where the power station will ride in the car and how far you will carry it at camp.

How long will it run your gear?

A simple estimate: usable watt-hours ÷ device watts = hours. Inverters and conversion lose some energy, so we assume about 85% of the rated capacity is usable. Real results vary with temperature and how hard the device works.

What to look for

Power station or jump starter?

A power station is not a replacement for a jump starter. Most cannot start a car with a dead battery. If you want both, read power station vs jump starter and see our best jump starters.

Frequently asked questions

What size power station do I need for car camping?

For a weekend with a 12V fridge, lights and phone charging, around 1,000Wh is a comfortable size. Solo travelers with light needs can manage with about 300Wh.

Can I charge a power station from my car?

Yes, most models charge from the 12V socket while you drive, but it is slow. Solar panels or wall charging before the trip are faster.

Can a portable power station run a 12V fridge overnight?

Yes. A compressor fridge averaging about 20W would use around 160–200Wh overnight, so even a small station can usually handle one night.

Is LFP (LiFePO4) better for a power station?

For most buyers, yes. LFP batteries are rated for thousands of charge cycles and are known for good thermal stability, which suits frequent camping use.
